Leader reflecting on foundational leadership shifts and influence

Part 2 — The Foundational Shifts: Mindset, Growth, and Influence

At P3:14 Consulting, we believe sustainable growth begins long before strategy. It starts with self-awareness, personal responsibility, and values-driven leadership. Before leaders can transform teams or organizations, they must first transform themselves. John C Maxwell highlights four foundational shifts that shape a leader’s character, credibility, and long-term effectiveness.

1. Goals Growth

Goals help you achieve, but growth helps you become.
Maxwell notes that “goals are seasonal; growth is lifelong.” Leaders who prioritize growth stay adaptable and resilient because they never stop learning.

2. Perks Price

Leadership isn’t about privilege or enjoying the perks. It’s about responsibility.
Influence increases when leaders willingly pay the price others avoid. Sacrifice builds credibility and moral authority.

3. Positional Authority Moral Authority

Titles don’t create influence; character does.
Moral authority grows from consistency, competence, and genuine care for people. This is the shift from “follow me because you have to” to “follow me because you want to.”

4. Director Connector

People follow leaders they feel connected to.
Connection requires empathy, listening, and shared purpose. Collaboration begins with a relationship, not direction.

These foundational shifts challenge leaders to look inward. They ask:

  • Am I growing?
  • Am I sacrificing?
  • Am I leading with character?
  • Am I connecting before I’m directing?

Next in the series:
We’ll move from personal transformation to team transformation—exploring how leaders shift from doing to empowering.
